History

St. Michael the Archangel School - 75 Years of Catholic Education

In June 1930, the Most Reverend Michael J. Curley, Archbishop of Baltimore, selected Father Thomas Aquinas Calnan to establish a new parish in Silver Spring, Maryland. From the beginning there was an emphasis on the importance of Catholic education. Father Calnan provided bus service for transportation of the children of the parish to attend Nativity School for the first three years of the parish.

Early in 1931, J. H. Cissel donated three large lots located on Montgomery Avenue (now Wayne Avenue) in downtown Silver Spring. Three adjoining lots were purchased from F.L. Hewitt. This land would become the home of St. Michael School.

On September 3, 1933, The Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary took up residence at the Jordan Estate on Maple Avenue (now Pershing Drive). The sisters agree to begin a parish school for St. Michael's in the two story manor house located on the property. On September 28, 1933, the first scholastic year of St. Michael School began under the leadership of Mother Mary Eleonore, SNJM. Total enrollment in the school was 160 students that first year and there were seven graduates of the school's first commencement on June 10, 1934.

By the end of 1935, enrollment at the school had reached capacity and the Holy Names sisters wished to open a high school for girls in the building being used as the elementary school. With the permission of Archbishop Curley, Father Calnan set in motion the construction of a permanent home for St. Michael School on lots on Montgomery Avenue. Parishioner, Donald Johnson was engaged as the supervising architect and construction by the Parkhill Construction Company began on the school early in 1936. By September 1936, the basement of the school was completed and ready to receive more than 250 students.

On October 26, 1936, Archbishop Curley formally dedicated the new school. The Archbishop praised the Pastor and people of St. Michael's saying:
" I want to tell you sincerely that if you were to offer me the choice
of accepting a five million dollar basilica or a little school in this
parish, I would have no hesitancy, I would accept the school.
You have given the Archdiocese a splendid school, one of which
you have reason to be proud."

So rapidly was the school enrollment growing that construction of a first and second story were added in 1937 and 1938. A final addition doubling the size of the school was completed in 1944. All of this fulfilling the dream of Father Calnan and the dedication of the people of St. Michael the Archangel in the midst of the Great Depression and World War.

Today, that dream continues and the legacy of Father Calnan and Mother Eleonore remains alive and vibrant. More than 4000 students have passed through the doors of St. Michael's and taken many, varied roads in life. Alumni of St. Michael School carry with them the foundation they received at the "little...splendid school" to every state in the union and locations around the world. As Archbishop Curley noted so many years ago, we have every "reason to be proud."
